Badan Barman is widely known in India and abroad in the field of Library and Information Science for innovative use of web technologies in his field of work. Early Life: Badan Barman was born on 26th of January, 1982 (as per the school certificate). He was the 2nd son of Shri Joykanta Barman and Smt. Joymati Barman. His father worked as a family servant, vegetable shopkeeper, day labourer, well-digger and maker of round RCC well rings during different times of his life. Even from 12 years to 21 years Badan Barman also used to work with his father in well-digging and making round RCC well rings in most of the homes in the Krishnanagar area of Japorigog and beyond to earn their livelihood. Badan Barman spent his early life in acute poverty. There were even days when the family could not have anything to eat for two consecutive days.
Education: Badan Barman started his education in Kachua L. P. School, Kaplabari, Nalbari. When his family moved to Guwahati, he took admission in class II in Krishnanagar L. P. School and from there after passing class V he got admitted into the Krishnanagar Vidyapeeth High School. Before Badan Barman no one was able to pass out in the class X examination from Krishnanagar High School and to motivate the students a few elite people of the locality announced a cash prize of Rs. 2000/- to the one who will be able to pass in the class X examination. In the year 1997 Badan Barman got the 1st class from Krishnanagar High School in the class X and with the cash prize award took admission into the B. Borooah College (Bholanath Borooah College) in science stream. In 1999 he got admission into the Guwahati College by opting Botany as an honours subject. In 2003, he got BSc (Botany) from Guwahati College with 1st class 15th Position (University Level). In 2005, he got 1st class 1st position (University Level) in the Master of Library and Information Science (MLISc) programme from the Department of Library and Information Science, Gauhati University. His master degree admission fees were provided by Mr. Pankaj Bora- the then Honourable Education Minister of Assam. He was awarded Ph.D. in Library and Information Science by Gauhati University in the year 2011 for his thesis “Web Resources in Library and Information Science: A Managerial Approach” under the guideship of Professor Narendra Lahkar. He got a fellowship for his Ph.D. programme from the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), New Delhi. He qualified in the UGC NET examination in Library and Information Science of December, 2005 and June, 2006.
Career: Dr. Badan Barman is working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Library and Information Science, Gauahati University since September 29, 2014 till date. He worked at the Central Reference Library, Kolkata as “Apprenticeship on Lib. & Inf. Science”. The author also worked as a Research Assistant in the ICSSR sponsored research project “Rural Libraries of North East India: A Machine-Readable Database” at DLISc, Gauhati University. He also worked for a short period at Media Trust, Assam. He also worked as Academic Consultant in Library and Information Science at Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University, Assam. Later on, he joined as Assistant Librarian in the same institute.
Writings: The first edition of his book “Library and Information Science: UGC-NET Guide”, ISBN: 978-81-86307-53-3 published by DVS Publisher was sold out within one year of its release and the “Library and Information Science: UGC-NET Guide”, 2nd Revised and Enlarged Edition (with objective type questions and answers) of the book was sold out within two years’ time from publication. He also compiled and self-published “Directory of Library and Information Science Teachers in India” in the year 2016 and other seven publications.

Research Projects: He completed one Major Research Project on “Application of Information Communication Technologies in Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University: A Road Ahead” jointly with Dr. Arupjyoti Choudhury and Dr. Ankuran Dutta. He completed two other Minor Research Projects entitled “Open Access E-Journal Portal of KKHSOU” and “Old Examination Question Papers of KKHSOU: Making it Accessible to the Learners”.
Awards and Honours: He was ICSSR, New Delhi Centrally Administered Doctoral Fellow. His LIS Links project was included in the 200 Tech Success Stories compiled by the PC Quest magazine, June 2010. The LIS Links project also received the “Jury Special Mention” award in the category of “Best Usages of ICT in Education and Learning” in the E-North East Award 2011 held at Kohima, Nagaland (India). It also received “Jury Special Mention” award in the category of Advocacy & Empowerment in the North East Social Impact Award 2015 held at NEDFi House, Guwahati, Assam (India) on 28th August, 2015.
Personal Life: Badan Barman married to Kankana Baishya in 2012 and they have a daughter – Sristishreya Barman.
